LUMEX Introduces Six New STN Color Liquid Crystal Display Modules as Effective Alternatives to TFT Displays

PALATINE, IL--Lumex Inc. is introducing six new full-color super-twisted nematic (STN) liquid crystal display (LCD) modules, which provide high-performance graphic display capabilities comparable to thin-film transistor (TFT) LCDs--but with a 60% cost savings. The Lumex STN color LCD modules are ideal for medical devices, industrial control panels, household products, and hand-held devices such as PDAs, cell phones, measuring instruments, meters, and electronic games. The modules are fully described in Lumex's new design guide, which is available at no cost to design engineers.

The six new modules include: A 1.5-inch (diagonal) version with a resolution of 101 x 80; a 2.8-inch, 320 x 240 version; a 3.9-inch, 320 x 240 version; a 5.7-inch 320 x 240 version; a 'wide profile' 6.5-inch 640 x 240 version, and a 7.5-inch, 640 x 480 version capable of true VGA output.

Contrast ratios are as high as 40:1, with brightness levels as high as 150cd/m². The units are equipped with a long-lasting backlight; the 1.5-inch unit uses white LEDs, all others use a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL). Lumex's STN Color LCD modules are true RGB devices, and the include all necessary driver and decoder circuitry, and are equipped with a standard 8-bit parallel data interface. Depending on the model, either a 2.8 or 3.3VDC logic supply voltage is used.

All units feature a wide viewing angle of 60° (x-axis) and 35° (y-axis), and are offered with a standard operating temperature range of 0°C to +50°C. An optional extended range of -20°C to +70°C is also available. Dimensions and weights of the units vary depending on display area. The smaller units are approximately 5mm (0.20-inch) thick and are as light as 8.3 grams (0.30 oz). The larger units are approximately 8mm (0.32-inch) thick, and have a maximum weight of 240 grams (8.5 oz).

Production quantities of standard units are available in 8 - 10 weeks. Semi-custom and full-custom STN color LCD modules are also available. Pricing varies, depending on the model specified, options requested, and quantity ordered. For the standard 2.8-inch, 320 x 240 display, pricing is approximately $45.00 each in quantities of 1,000.
