Dot pattern adhesive coating offers advantages for wound care, wearable device markets
Stow, Ohio - June 13, 2005 - Medical applications requiring direct skin contact over an extended period of time, such as wound care or long-wear device, rely on high-performance, high moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) to provide comfortable adhesion for patients. Such PSAs must provide long-term adhesion without impairing device equipment functionality or patient comfort. To better meet these requirements, MACtac® Technical Products designed the MACdots coating system, which provides custom adhesive deposition in dot formation for medical applications.
The coating system lays down adhesive in a dot formation on the liner, instead of the more traditional full gum layer of adhesive. Each PSA can be tailored for a specific application on
three levels:
o Adhesion. MACtac can control the size of dots and volume of adhesive deposited per dot for control of adhesion level. Thirty to 100 percent surface coating is possible.
o Breathability. Altering the distance between dots helps improve breathability levels, as well as moisture vapor and fluid transmission rates.
o Pattern. Dots can be deposited as required, providing the ability to leave areas uncoated as needed for electronics, circuitry or other components.
MACdot coatings employ a rubber-based, hypoallergenic, skin-friendly adhesive. Patterns can be coated onto a variety of flexible face materials, including polyester non-wovens (white and flesh colored), nylon non-wovens, highly-breathable polyurethane and transfer tapes.
"The MACdot coating system allows for customized, precise control of PSA deposition," says Tim Mlnarik, MACtac Technical Products medical business development manager. "In wound care applications, this allows for improved breathability, an important factor when it is necessary for moisture or exudate to permeate out from a wound during the healing process."
Apart from wound care, MACdots also offer advantages to the medical device market where patient skin contact may be necessary for the device to function. Devices that require permeation of gas, air or water, such as certain in-vitro diagnostic devices, can benefit from the breathability of the MACdots adhesive. Pattern coating also allows for adhesive to be dispersed only where the PSA needs to touch the skin, leaving ungummed areas for the insertion of electronics or other components.
