Carbide Drills avoid bending thin-wall alloy parts.

Press Release Summary:

Sculptured Edge (SE) 284 and SE 285 drills have positive-rake chisel point with large active cutting area that reduces stress and provides freer chip flow when machining high-temperature alloys. Cutting geometry reduces thrust by 20%. Short-length SE 284 models are offered in metric sizes from 4 to 25 mm and inch sizes from .1563 to .7500 in. SE 285 drills are regular length by DIN standards. They are available in metric sizes from 5 to 25 mm and inch sizes from .1563 to 1.101 in.

New Carbide Drills Avoid Bending Thin-Wall High Temperature Alloy Parts

Latrobe, PA (August 21, 2002) -- Kennametal has introduced a new line of solid carbide drills with a special cutting geometry that reduces thrust 20% to avoid bending thin-wall high temperature alloy parts. Conventional drills are ground with flat chisel points that push and tear the material as they enter
the cut. The new Sculptured Edge (SE) 284 and SE 285 drills have a special positive-rake chisel point with an extremely large active cutting area that substantially reduces stress and provides freer chip flow when machining high temperature alloys and other work hardening materials. "These new generation drills have a higher positive rake angle than current SE drills, so
they are ideal for cutting high temperature alloys such as Inconel and Rene 41, titanium, titanium alloys and other materials used in the aerospace and medical industries," said Allen Poponick, Product Manager for Kennametal. "The freer cutting action makes it possible to increase cutting speeds and also provides tool life improvements."

Unlike carbide drills that basically duplicate the design of previous high speed steel designs, SE 284 and SE 285 drills take full advantage of the physical properties of carbide. The unique SE point creates a smooth transition from the major cutting edge to the drill point, allowing the drill to actively cut metal over the full distance from the center to the outer diameter. The self-centering capability and superior rigidity of the new drills prevents the chip from wandering or walking at the beginning of the cut. The result is that these drills produce very consistent, concentric holes. Rather than ramming chips into the face of the drill, the drill's flute design tightly
curls them and moves them up and out of the hole, providing further reductions in cutting force.

SE284 and SE284 drills are available in uncoated grade K715, avoiding any possibility that the coating will contaminate the workpiece. This 9.5% cobalt submicron grade provides high strength and resistance to built-up edge, two properties that are very important in cutting high temperature alloys. The
combination of a lightly-honed cutting edge and sharp margins provide further reductions in cutting force and heat which reduces work hardening. SE 284 drills are available in metric sizes from 4,0 mm to 25,0 mm and in inch sizes from .1563" to .7500". SE 285 drills are available in metric sizes from 5,0 mm to 25,0 mm and in inch sizes from .1563" to 1.101". SE 284
drills are short-length and SE 285 drills are regular length by DIN standards. The drills can be factory reconditioned to like-new cutting performance.
