Buck Regulator Reference Design simplifies DC-DC conversion.

Press Release Summary:

Suited for designers of telecom, server, set-top box, and other consumer applications, synchronous RD278 features FAN21SV06, single supply, highly integrated 6 A buck solution that can be configured to work as either master or slave. Buck solution combines controller, driver, and optimized power MOSFETs in compact 5 x 6 mm MLP package and has wide operating range of 6.5-24 V. Regulator can be enabled separately, allowing for power-sequencing in point of load (POL) applications.

Fairchild Semiconductor's TinyBuck(TM) Reference Design Simplifies DC-DC Conversion Designs

Delivers High Efficiency for Telecom, Set-top Boxes and Consumer Applications

San Jose, California - April 9, 2009 - Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) makes it easier for designers of telecom, servers, set-top boxes and other consumer applications to develop a more efficient and compact solution with this synchronous Buck regulator reference design. The RD278 features the FAN21SV06, a single supply, highly integrated 6A synchronous Buck solution that enables designers to reach high levels of efficiency in less space. The RD278 reference design provides up to 95 percent efficiency depending on the input and output conditions and operates over a wide input voltage range from 8V to 20V. FAN21SV06 can be configured to operate in either master or slave mode. In slave mode, the regulator accepts external synchronizing signals and synchronizes the output switching frequency with the input signal. The output voltage, switching frequency and current limit functions on this design can be reconfigured to suit the application by changing few components.

The FAN21SV06 integrates a controller, driver and optimized power MOSFETs in a compact 5mm x 6mm MLP package. This device has a wide operating range of 6.5V to 24V, and is ideally suited to generate various system level voltage rails easily. An added advantage of the FAN21SV06 is that the regulator can be enabled separately allowing power-sequencing in point of load (POL) applications.

Fairchild offers a wide range of reference designs that reduce board space, simplify design, ensure system reliability and speed time to market. These production-ready designs are important in enabling OEMs to shorten their design time and bring their applications to market faster.
