Cree Introduces Megabright® Plus(TM) and Xbright® Plus(TM) Blue LEDs

Durham, NC, June 3, 2003 - Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE) today announced the introduction of its MegaBright® Plus(tm) and XBright® Plus(tm) blue light emitting diodes (LEDs). The typical brightness level for the new MegaBright Plus device is approximately 30 percent higher than Cree's MegaBright product, and the typical brightness level for the new XBright Plus device is approximately 20 percent higher than Cree's XBright product. Both the MegaBright Plus (MB Plus(tm)) and XBright Plus (XB Plus(tm)) devices will be offered in 460 nm and 470 nm versions. The 470 nm MB Plus product has a minimum radiant flux of 12 mW with a typical radiant flux of 13 mW, and the 470 nm XB Plus product has a minimum radiant flux of 15 mW with a typical radiant flux of 17 mW. The MB Plus and XB Plus product specifications make these devices desirable for applications for white LED backlighting of mobile appliance color liquid crystal displays. Production quantities are currently available for both the MB Plus and XB Plus products.

Mike Dunn, Vice President, Optoelectronics stated, "These brighter versions of our MegaBright and XBright products offer exciting opportunities targeted specifically at the white LED market. We believe our customers can achieve even greater performance by using these products in applications requiring white light, such as color LCD backlighting."

In related news, Cree announced that it has begun providing initial samples of its new RazerThin(tm) LED products to select customers. These products are 60 percent thinner than Cree's standard products at approximately 100 um in height, and also offer a lower forward voltage. Preliminary specifications for this product include a typical Vf of 2.9V when operated at 5 mA. Applications for next generation keypad backlighting require sub-miniaturization and a thinner form factor for LEDs. The full release of this product is targeted for early July.

Cree is an advanced semiconductor company that leverages its expertise in silicon carbide (SiC), gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon (Si) materials technology to produce new and enabling semiconductors. The products include blue, green and ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (LEDs), near UV lasers, radio frequency (RF) and microwave devices, and power switching devices.
