Belzona Inc. Announces an Innovative Alternative to Welding

Miami, FL - (January 15, 2008) Belzona, Inc., established in the market as a leader in erosion-corrosion technology for over 55 years, proclaims cold plate bonding as a novel solution to the maintenance of a wide array of cylindrical containment areas for repairs which encompass holed hoppers, tank base plating, sealing flanges, scrubber ducting, pitted tanks, deluge system and handrail support pads, sealing pipe work, and lead bearing pads.

Demonstrated as a versatile solution for numerous applications, cold plate bonding when designed correctly has an incredible success rate without many of the drawbacks or potential problems from welding.

The procedure can be carried out through two distinct methods: glue or injection, dependant on the scenario - surface area, turn-around, etc. The "glue" method requires that paste grade product be applied to both the under side of the steel plate and the substrate of the repaired part, with additional product added as the two joining surfaces are forced together and held until cure.

The "injection method" uses a dam of paste grade material to seal the plate to the substrate. Pre-drilled holes on the plate provide suitable injection points and air vents to ensure no air gaps are left. Belzona Technical Service Engineer, Ivan Ordaz, affirmed, "Aside from vastly reinforcing the section of the equipment that has thinned due to deterioration from inside out, where Belzona products fill in holed sections, it actually provides a superior barrier to that of the previous existing substrate."

Belzona's cold cure system eliminates the risk of weld defects, including warping of the substrate, internal stress, and galvanic corrosion arising from heat affected zones.

In addition, conventional solutions that require the area to be welded present several setbacks such as shut down and hot work permits. A distinct advantage of Belzona's plate bonding approach includes the system's simplicity in application and ability to be applied in situ resulting in reduced down time and cost. As such, industries such as oil and gas are transitioning away from high-risk repairs such as welding and are adopting composite repairs. In essence, the Belzona solution offers a radically safer, simpler, and more cost effective solution.
