Crossbeam Systems Unveils New Application Processing Module That Delivers Industry-Leading 8 Gigabits of Intrusion Prevention Security

Crossbeam's APM-8400 for its X-Series Redefines Network Security Performance Benchmarks and Extends Crossbeam's Leadership in Solutions for Protecting the World's Largest Networks

SAN FRANCISCO, RSA CONFERENCE, BOOTH #102, Feb. 16 -- Crossbeam Systems(R), Inc., the leader in protecting the world's largest networks, today announced a new application processing module (APM) for its X- Series security services switches that delivers up to 4 Gbps of firewall performance per module and up to 8 Gbps of intrusion prevention (IPS) and internal network security performance in a single chassis. Called the APM- 8400, the new module is already shipping to customers.

One APM-8400 matches the performance of an entire ASIC-based firewall appliance and an X-Series switch using the modules delivers up to four times the performance of existing or previously announced IPS solutions. Using the new APM-8400s, a Crossbeam X45(TM) delivers up to 5 Gbps of IPS while a Crossbeam X80(TM) delivers up to 8 Gbps of IPS.

In Crossbeam's X-Series security services switches, APMs process flows received from the network processing modules using best-in-class security engines, such as InterSpect(TM) and VPN-1(R) Pro(TM) from Check Point Software Technologies for internal security and firewall/VPN. Each APM runs one or more instances of a security engine and the APMs can be grouped to create load-balancing groups for high availability and increased processing performance.

The new APM-8400 features dual Intel(R) Xeon(TM) processors that are specifically designed for security, telecommunications and other demanding communications applications that require the highest levels of processing performance. Combined with a carrier-class switching fabric and Crossbeam's own flow acceleration technology, the APM-8400 delivers unparalleled wire- speed security processing and the versatility of a general-purpose processing environment to adapt to new security threats. The APM-8400 also includes options for additional memory and 3DES encryption.

"Network security has always been a trade-off between security and performance, whether it's an ASIC-based appliance running proprietary security software or best-in-class security software running on off-the-shelf servers," said Peter George, president and CEO of Crossbeam Systems. "Crossbeam has pioneered a different, 'no compromises' approach that combines security- optimized networking platforms and best-in-class security applications. The new APM-8400 and our unmatched security performance is further evidence of that leadership."

Crossbeam's X45 and X80 security services switches running InterSpect as internal security gateways can be deployed in the core, distribution or access layers in either bridge or switch modes so they can be inserted into networks with minimal or no changes. To create secure containment zones, Crossbeam's X-Series platforms have up to 32 Fast Ethernet and 64 Gigabit Ethernet ports and support up to 4096 VLANs. Crossbeam also has single- or dual-box, high availability with interface and application redundancy and self-healing, fail open capabilities.

Crossbeam's X-Series and C-Series security services switches are currently protecting more than 450 enterprise and service provider networks worldwide. In addition to applications from Check Point, Crossbeam's platforms support leading security software from Internet Security Systems, Aladdin, Secure Computing, Trend Micro and Websense, among others.
