We Deliver Quality On Time
The SOR manufacturing floor recently adopted a new system that has a significant impact on the company mission statement, "We Deliver Quality On Time." Called the 5-S Visual Workplace, the system is a means to achieve continuous improvement and promote a safe working environment.
The 5-S Visual Workplace incorporates a system of steps and procedures to be used by individuals and teams to arrange work areas to optimize performance, comfort, safety and cleanliness. The program consists of Sorting items in the work area, Simplifying the access to needed items, Sweeping visually to make sure everything is in its proper location, Standardizing the needed information and location of needed items and Self-discipline by routinely practicing all of the previous steps and assuring all team members agree to do the same.
Many companies use the 5-S system as a prelude to getting their ISO certification; however the voluntary adoption of the practice is being increasingly recognized internationally as beneficial when combined with ISO procedures.
SOR has been ISO certified since April 1, 1993. Vice President of Manufacturing Bert Benton says, "We view the 5-S Visual Workplace system as being seamless with our ISO procedures. It contributes to better manufacturing efficiencies, reduced training cycles, improved team performance, enhance communication, improved safety, reduced costs and, most important of all, better customer relations. It's just one more way of living up to the SOR motto, We Deliver Quality On Time."
