VectorWorks User Sacco + McKinney Wins 2006 Build New York Award

Columbia, Maryland (November 28, 2006)-Nemetschek North America is pleased to announce VectorWorks Architect user Sacco + McKinney Architects, P.C., has won a 2006 Build New York Award from the General Building Contractors Association of New York State (GBC) for College Park Hall at Union College. Its winning project was one of four projects chosen on the basis of excellent project delivery at all levels. The design-builder was MLB Construction Services, LLC.

College Park Hall houses 260 Union College students in 170 bedrooms with private bathrooms. The facility includes such amenities as study lounges, meeting rooms, laundry facilities, a game room, a fitness/exercise room, and a coffee bar. The building's completely refurbished kitchen, services area, dining room, and ballroom are able to accommodate conferences, banquets, and special functions.

"The original property was a brown-field site with an abandoned hotel on the edge of Union College's main campus," says James McKinney, AIA, NCARB, LEED, Sacco + McKinney principal. "So this project required strong visualization for winning the design-build competition, as well as speed and efficiency in getting the construction documents completed so the building could be finished in time for the next school year."

He continues, "VectorWorks Architect cemented the deal and kept us on schedule. We were able to establish a design direction in two weeks, then take the 3D model, project it into 2D, generate some elevations, and give them to the building contractor to do an estimate. At the Build New York Awards ceremony, people remarked that the early VectorWorks Architect models were almost indistinguishable from the completed project."

In 1990, the GBC started its Build New York Awards program in an effort to portray the positive impact of the construction industry in New York State and to enhance the reputation of its general contractor and construction manager members. Entries are solicited from members each spring. The winners are honored at a gala event in the fall and are featured in the fall issue of Build New York magazine.

The awards emphasize the entire construction team, recognizing not only the general contractor or construction manager, but also the many others who contribute to the success of a project-the owner, architect, engineer, subcontractors, suppliers, and craftspeople.
