UltraFlex Induction Soldering Copper Tubing to Brass Valves within 20 Sec

UltraFlex Power Technologies - a leading manufacturer of digitally controlled induction heaters - recently shared the results from a test induction soldering application where copper tubes had to be soldered to brass valves.

This soldering test - set up per request from a potential customer operating in the HVAC manufacturing industry - was aimed at evaluating whether induction soldering could successfully replace torch-based soldering, reducing soldering time and costs, removing defects and improving safety for the operators.

An UltraFlex W10/150 induction heating unit had been considered most appropriate for this induction heating scenario. UltraFlex induction heaters from the UltraHeat W Series are advanced, cost-effective 5-15 kW induction heating systems utilizing the latest switching power supply technology. They are configured to operate with external Heat Stations allowing output connections to be available from all sides.

The soldering test was accomplished by first assembling the setup of copper tubing and brass valves, applying flux to each joint and then heating the joint for 20 seconds. Solder was then manually applied after the joints reached 932oF (500o C), thus creating an even solder around the joints.

At power output of 11 kW, it took mere 20 seconds to complete the entire induction soldering process. The solder was evaluated and confirmed to be reliable and defect-free. Finally, due to the lack of open flame, the induction soldering was a completely safe operation - both to the operator and the environment. With all goals met, the use of induction heating was considered successful for this HVAC application.
