W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., - Papers are invited for a workshop on Energy Efficient Hydraulic Fluids, to be held June 25, 2012, at the Hilton San Francisco in San Francisco, Calif. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, the symposium will be held in conjunction with the June standards development meetings of the committee. Energy efficiency has become a driver for many industries due to increasing interest in reducing carbon footprints and obtaining associated benefits. Since hydraulic systems are widely used for transmitting power, much attention has focused on increasing hydraulic pump efficiency. Numerous studies using a variety of techniques to measure the effect of different fluids on hydraulic pump, motor and system efficiency have been reported in recent years. However, standard methods for determining the effect of hydraulic fluids on efficiency do not exist. Papers are solicited to address the development of energy efficient hydraulic fluids and measurement of the resulting benefits. Potential paper topics include but are not limited to: pump efficiency test methodology; hydraulic fluid performance; field trials; theory and modeling; hydraulic fluid chemistry; hydraulic fluid impact on wear and efficiency; efficiency benefits; sustainability; pump types; and motor types. Interested participants must submit a 250-300 word abstract to workshop chairman Rob Davidson via email (email@example.com) by Nov. 1, 2011. The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. We are pleased to announce that Professor Kim A. Stelson has agreed to be the keynote speaker for the workshop. Dr. Stelson is director of the NSF-funded Engineering Research Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power. The center includes seven universities, three non-profit organizations and sixty member companies. Stelson is also a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Stelson's research in fluid power emphasizes the potential for new technology to greatly improve energy efficiency in new and existing applications such as the control of vehicle power trains and hydrostatic transmissions for wind turbines.
