Conformal Coatings Offer Higher Reliability Protection And Easier Processing Are Detailed In New Guide From Dymax

A new selector guide from DYMAX Corporation features a wide range of solvent-free UV conformal coatings for electronic assembly and a selection of compatible application and light curing systems. The guide describes how the coatings and application equipment provide cleaner, more efficient and environmentally compliant coating processes that offer better protection with less resin. The fast curing capability of DYMAX coatings and encapsulants results in lower processing costs.

The selector guide lists the available UV conformal coatings, how to choose a coating, and how the materials are successfully applied and cured, as well as the recommended removal methods. Performance characteristics featured include viscosity, durometer, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity, dielectric strength, volume and surface resistivity of each product.

A detailed section describes the selective spraying of conformal coatings and the equipment necessary for their successful application. The advantages of using the spraying application system are listed including the control features that allow the
material to be applied only where it is needed and in the precise thickness desired, thereby limiting the volume of material needed for PCB protection. Compared with solvent-based systems, the amount of material required is also lowered with the use of DYMAX solvent-free conformal coatings.

DYMAX materials are tough, abrasion resistant resins with excellent electrical properties. Designed for harsh environmental conditions, many coatings are both Mil Spec and UL approved. Some coatings are easily repairable and grades that fluoresce brightly upon exposure to black light are available. Other coatings form smooth glossy protective surfaces and exhibit excellent adhesion to a wide variety of glass-filled epoxy, metal and ceramic surfaces. Coatings and encapsulants are available that exhibit excellent adhesion to difficult surfaces such as polyimides.

Equipment for curing coatings is pictured and the cure parameters described. Conveyor mounted systems, for use in high speed automated assembly, are also shown with high intensity spot curing systems and stand alone curing chambers.
