Press Release Summary:

To be held in Phoenix, AZ on May 9, Verification of Life Prediction Software workshop will bring together life prediction software developers, users, certifying agencies, and technical specialists familiar with verification and validation (V&V) of software in diverse fields. This workshop will serve as starting point Subcommittee E08.04's effort to develop ASTM guide for V&V of life prediction methods and software. Online registration is open and will close May 2.

Original Press Release:

ASTM International Workshop on Verification and Validation of Solid Mechanic and Life Prediction Software

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.-A workshop on Verification of Life Prediction Software will be held May 9 at the Sheraton Phoenix in Phoenix, Ariz. The workshop is sponsored by ASTM International Subcommittee E08.04 on Structural Applications, and is being held in conjunction with the May standards development meetings of Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture.

The increased use of modeling offers the potential for significant benefits to all aspects of engineering, including reduced development and testing time and cost. The issue of verification and validation (V&V) of structural and life prediction models and methods has been identified as a critical issue in the acceptance of modeling to reduce or eliminate testing in areas where structural integrity is critical. While other engineering disciplines, such as computational fluid mechanics and computational solid mechanics, are working to address V&V in a systematic and rigorous manner, the same is currently not the case in the fatigue and fracture community served by Committee E08.

The purpose of the workshop is to bring together life prediction software developers, users, certifying agencies and technical specialists that are familiar with V&V of software in other fields (e.g., solid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, etc.). This workshop will form the starting point for E08.04's effort to develop an ASTM guide for V&V of life prediction methods and software.

Online registration is now open and closes May 2. There is no fee to attend the workshop for ASTM members, presenters and students. For non-ASTM members, the fee is $50 USD for online registration and $75 USD on site. Visit to register and for additional information.

Additional technical information is available from workshop co-chairmen Markus Heinimann, Alcoa Technical Center, Alcoa Center, Pa. (phone: 742-337-2657;; and Scott Prost-Domasky, Apes Inc., St. Louis, Mo. (phone: 314-644-6040;

ASTM International is one of the largest international standards development and delivery systems in the world. ASTM International meets the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles for the development of international standards: coherence, consensus, development dimension, effectiveness, impartiality, openness, relevance and transparency. ASTM standards are accepted and used in research and development, product testing, quality systems and commercial transactions.
