Papers Are Invited for ASTM International Symposium on Silica and Associated Respirable Mineral Particles
W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., - Papers are invited for a symposium on Silica and Associated Respirable Mineral Particles, to be held Oct. 25-26, 2012, at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta in Atlanta, Ga. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee D22 on Air Quality, the symposium will be held in conjunction with the committee's standards development meetings.
This symposium builds on the work presented at the first ASTM silica symposium held in 2004 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and provides an update on sampling and analytical progress towards accurately assessing respirable crystalline silica (RCS) exposures for compliance with current limit values for improved worker protection. It will be valuable to regulators and bodies which set guidance for RCS exposures; managers and technicians of laboratories engaged in RCS analysis; hygienists and others collecting samples for RCS; risk assessors and managers engaged in determining and managing the risks of products or processes that may result in emission of RCS; and representatives of workers exposed to these products and processes.
Papers are requested on any aspects of sampling and analysis of airborne respirable dust generally or respirable crystalline silica specifically. Topics include the development, implementation, quality assurance and validation of existing or novel samplers; direct and indirect sample preparation procedures; and analytical methods (gravimetric, colorimetric, infra-red absorption or X-ray diffraction).
To participate in the symposium, presenters/authors must submit a 250-300 word preliminary abstract no later than Nov. 10, 2011. The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. Symposium co-chairmen Dr. Martin Harper and Dr. Taekhee Lee will notify you via postal mail by Dec. 2, 2011, of your paper's acceptability for presentation at the symposium.
Symposium presenters are required to submit their papers to the Selected Technical Paper (STP), an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community. Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due no later than Oct. 12, 2012.
