Thermoplastic Elastomers suit overmolding of PC/ABS compounds.

Press Release Summary:

By adhering to PC/ABS compounds, Elastocon STK Series Styrenic TPEs provide added protection as well as sound and vibration dampening for variety of consumer and industrial end products. STK 40 and STK 60 offer hardness of 40 and 60 Shore A, respectively, giving products soft touch and feel. In addition to overmolding or coextrusion applications, TPE grades can be extruded, blow molded, or compounded. All TPEs are free from latex and RoHS compliant.

Original Press Release:

Two New Grades of Elastocon TPEs Found to Overmold Superbly Onto Wide Range of PC/ABS Compounds

ROCHESTER, IL - Designers and marketers who want to improve or expand applications for their products made out of PC/ABS blends (polycarbonate and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) can now overmold or coextrude them with new TPEs from Elastocon TPE Technologies, Inc. The end result will improve both the functionality and the look of new or existing products.

Applicable brands of PC/ABS compounds where the Elastocon STK Series of TPEs are claimed to have excellent overmold capabilities include LNP Faradex® compounds from SABIC. Other PC/ABS compounds include Bayblend® from Bayer and PC/ABS compounds sold under the trade names 4Loy, Diablend, Durolux, Elastablend, Greenloy, Nexalloy, Polyblend, Hytex and Triloy, among many others.

PC/ABS compounds sold under the Faradex brand are used for EMI/FI attenuation to provide electromagnetic and radio frequency interference in enclosures and components for business and medical equipment and optical instrumentation. Other PC and PC/ABS blends and PC alloys are used for appliance housings, mechanical parts for computers and service equipment and diagnostic equipment.

According to Elastocon sources, the firm's STK 40 and STK 60 Series of styrenic TPEs (thermoplastic elastomers) overmold easily and with excellent adhesion onto the PC/ABS compounds tested. In doing so, the TPEs can markedly enhance, improve, provide added protection or sound or vibration dampening, or otherwise complement a variety of consumer and industrial end products made of these PC or PC/ABS blends. Further, the low hardness (40 and 60 Shore A respectively) gives the products a soft touch or feel.

In addition to being highly suitable for overmolding or coextrusion applications, the TPE grades can be extruded, blow molded or compounded. The STK series also has excellent colorability.

At the present time, Elastocon offers a 2800 Series and 8000 Series of TPEs, a SMR Series of TPOs, the STK Series for overmolding, and alloys, all of which can be injection molded, extruded, blow molded or compounded. Elastocon thermoplastic elastomers do not require drying and are offered for applications that require rubber-like properties, impact resistance, colorability, a good surface finish, easy processability, reduced material usage and numerous other features and benefits. All Elastocon grades are free from latex, and are RoHS and California Proposition 65 compliant, with many of the company offerings being FDA compliant, as well as UL and NSF approvable, and are suitable for medical applications. Elastocon can provide ISO reporting for manufacturing and shipping. All grades are reclaimable and recyclable.
