Aricent Delivers ISS-Metro, the Industry's First Pre-Packaged Intelligent Switching Solution with PBB, PBB-TE and Ethernet Protection Switching

New Release of Industry-Leading Licensable Framework Offers Complete Solution for Ethernet Access, Aggregation, Edge and Transport Equipment

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 20 -- Aricent(TM), a global innovation, technology and service company focused exclusively on communications, today announced ISS-Metro(TM), a new release of its market-leading Intelligent Switching Solution (ISS) specifically optimized for carrier and metro Ethernet product development. Aricent's ISS is a licensable, pre-packaged software framework that jumpstarts the development and integration of advanced switching products, and has been selected by more than 35 networking and telecom equipment manufacturers worldwide.

According to Infonetics Research, the majority of access and aggregation equipment being deployed by carriers around the world will be IP, Ethernet, and WDM, driving an equipment opportunity of over $20B USD in 2010.

"Aricent's software is one of the industry's best kept secret weapons, providing an extensive collection of standards-based protocol software that manufacturers use in order that their engineering groups can focus on adding value and differentiation. This new release of ISS-Metro adds the just-standardized PBB-TE to complex switching functions that carriers are demanding today," stated Michael Howard, principal analyst at Infonetics Research. "The demand for high-performance Ethernet for enterprise and metro applications is increasing each year, and frameworks such as ISS-Metro support the aggressive schedules, advanced features, and operational assurance customers want."

Aricent's ISS-Metro is targeted at networking and telecom equipment manufacturers building products and services to deploy high performance Ethernet in access, aggregation, edge and transport equipment. These deployments range from greenfield build-outs to replacement of ATM and SONET infrastructure. Applications include FTTH, FTTC, Ethernet DSL access, MSAN, mobile backhaul/cellular backhaul and VPNs over packet infrastructure.

The ISS-Metro release offers advanced spanning tree algorithms, Ethernet Operations, Administration and Management (OAM) capabilities, Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM), Provider Backbone Bridges (PBB), Provider Backbone Bridge Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE), virtualization of switching components, fault tolerant high availability, and Ethernet protection switching. Aricent also offers MPLS as an add-on to the ISS-Metro package.

These capabilities, available in a licensable pre-packaged solution, represent another industry first for Aricent. ISS-Metro is compliant with 802.1ag, 802.3ah, 802.1ah and 802.1Qay standards from the IEEE as well as the Y.1731 and G.8031 standards from the ITU-T.

ISS Metro is hardware and operating system agnostic, and can be easily ported to virtually any platform. Further, Aricent has developed reference architectures with leading silicon suppliers, providing a high degree of integration and simplifying product development of today's complex switching solutions.

Aricent offers ISS packages for a variety of applications, from simple managed Ethernet switches to industrial Ethernet platforms, from Layer 3 switches with comprehensive routing capabilities, to metro Ethernet / carrier Ethernet applications, such as cellular / mobile backhaul, optical aggregation, DSLAMs, GPON switches, and (Multi Service Access Nodes) MSANs. Aricent offers flexible licensing models to customers, who can take advantage of individual components or any desired combination of hardware and OS. The ISS control plane module offers a complete feature-set including RSTP/MSTP, VLAN, IGMP Snooping, GVRP/GMRP, LA, LACP, MLD Snooping and LLDP. The IP routing features include IPv4, IPv6, RIP, RIPv6, BGP4, OSPF, OSPFv6, IGMP, MLD, PIM and DVMRP. For more information visit: http://aricent.com/Products/IntelligentEthernetSwitching.aspx.

"Aricent's Intelligent Switching Solution is at the heart of some of the world's most advanced Ethernet equipment produced globally," explained C P Murali, senior vice president at Aricent. "These new capabilities will enable our customers to further differentiate their solutions in the highly competitive market for metro Ethernet equipment."
