Optical Bypass Relay allows uninterruptible communication.

Press Release Summary:

Permitting uninterruptible activation/deactivation of industrial Ethernet network devices in line and ring structures, Scalance XC100-4OBR simplifies maintenance work where individual devices have to be switched off. If power is interrupted at bypass relay and active network components concerned, 2 optical network interfaces are mechanically reconnected within 10 ms. Connection to deactivated network component is bypassed automatically while disconnected from power supply.

Uninterruptible Mechanical Redundancy for Networks

Scalance X-100

Nuremberg, Germany. The Siemens Industry Automation Division has supplemented its portfolio of industrial network products to include the new Scalance XC100-4OBR optical bypass relay, which permits uninterruptible activation and deactivation of Industrial Ethernet network devices in line and ring structures.

The new optical bypass relay Scalance XC100-4OBR allows uninterruptible communication with other network users, simplifying applications such as maintenance work on offshore wind farms or chemical plants where individual devices have to be switched off. If the power is interrupted at the bypass relay and the active network components concerned, the two optical network interfaces are mechanically reconnected within ten milliseconds. Thus the connection to the deactivated network component is bypassed automatically while disconnected from the power supply. When the power is restored, the bypass is retained intact long enough to ensure that the network components are once again ready for operation and the connection between them and the adjacent components has been re-established. In ring-shaped network structures, the new mechanism allows a ring device to be switched on or off without activating the redundancy manager. With the aid of a green button at the device, the user is able to configure the activation delay and the voltage range.

The new Scalance XC100-4OBR optical bypass relay from Siemens is available with an extended temperature range (-40 to +70 degrees Celsius) and PCBs with conformal coating to withstand hostile industrial environments.
