MOSFETs address high-voltage, fast-switching applications.

Press Release Summary:

With maximum gate-to-source voltage rated at ±30 V, SuperFET(TM) MOSFETs withstand high-speed voltage and current switching transients. Units are suited for transient-prone applications such as High Intensity Discharge lighting ballasts and power supplies for Plasma Display Panel televisions. Minimization of conduction losses that SuperFETs offer is important to lighting manufacturers trying to conserve energy to meet PFC requirements.

Fairchild Semiconductor's High-Voltage SuperFET(TM) Products Optimize System Efficiency and Reliability While Reducing Overall Costs

600 V MOSFETs provide designers total systems solutions for PFC circuitry, lighting, and AC/DC power supply designs

San Jose, Calif.-April 29, 2005--Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) offers eight new high-voltage SuperFET(TM) MOSFETs specifically designed to address demanding high-voltage, fast-switching applications requiring high efficiency, such as active Power Factor Correction (PFC), lighting, and AC/DC power supply systems.

SuperFET technology minimizes conduction losses and increases switching performance by lowering RDS(ON) and gate charge (Qg). This technology is designed to withstand both high-speed voltage (di/dt) and current (dv/dt) switching transients, allowing the devices to operate reliably at higher frequencies. The new SuperFET family also has repetitive avalanche energy ratings that are an order of magnitude higher than alternative solutions. These features, combined with a maximum gate-to-source voltage rated at ±30 V (50% higher than competitive devices), allow SuperFETs to provide improved ruggedness that makes them more reliable in high-voltage applications.

"As the breakdown voltage of a standard MOSFET rises, the RDS(ON) goes up exponentially and leads to increased die size, a trade-off that creates a challenge for designers," said JongMin Na, Fairchild's marketing manager, Power Supply and Industrial Power Applications, Power Discrete Group. "Fairchild's new SuperFET technology changes the relationship of the RDS(ON) from being exponential to linear. This solution allows the device to achieve a very impressive RDS(ON) and small die size at a 600 V breakdown voltage, which results in improved efficiency in end-applications."

The reliability provided by SuperFET technology is a particularly important benefit in transient-prone applications such as High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting ballasts and power supplies for Plasma Display Panel (PDP) televisions. The minimization of conduction losses that SuperFETs offer are important to lighting manufacturers who increasingly seek ways to conserve energy to meet PFC requirements. Similarly, demanding applications like AC/DC power supplies for plasma TVs rely on designs that offer reliability and efficiency to ultimately lower system costs. In power supply applications, for example, the SuperFETs' low on-resistance diminishes power losses, allowing designers to eliminate the need for expensive cooling systems, thus saving space in designs. The SuperFETs' low gate charge also makes them easier to drive and allows them to switch on/off at faster rates to increase efficiency.

As The Power Franchise®, Fairchild enables total system solutions by providing a complete portfolio of complementary products that work in tandem with advanced SuperFETs, including PFC controllers, PWM controllers and optically isolated amplifiers. For example, SuperFETs can be used with Fairchild's FAN7527B, a cost-effective PFC controller targeting ballast applications, or with their FAN4822 ZVS PFC controller or FAN4810 PFC controller, which enhance 400 W-plus plasma display applications. Advanced SuperFETs also combine with Fairchild's new FAN7380/FAN7382 half-bridge gate driver ICs to significantly increase efficiency in ballast designs. In addition to a comprehensive product portfolio, Fairchild provides worldwide power design labs and online design tools to help designers meet time-to-market demands while reducing overall system costs. These online design tools include the Power Factor Correction (PFC) tutorial, Power Supply Design Toolkit and the FETBench product selector tool (http://www.fairchildsemi.com/acdc).

SuperFETs come in a variety of packages including TO-220, TO-220F, TO-263 (D2-PAK), TO-247 and TO-3P. These products are lead-free (Pb-free) and meet or exceed the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020B and are compliant with European Union requirements now in effect.
