Copper-Based Composites replace nickel battery straps.
September 26, 2007 -
Offering weldability of nickel with higher electric conductivities, Copper-Based Composites can be successfully joined to cells by resistance or laser welding as well as soldering. In addition to replacing solid nickel interconnect strapping for battery packs, materials are suited for hybrid automotive battery applications, optimizing discharge rates and safety.

New Battery Interconnect System: Weldable, Copper-Based Composites
Solid Nickel Replacement for Battery Straps
Technical Materials Inc. (TMI) has introduced a new line of materials to replace solid nickel interconnect strapping for battery packs. These materials offer the weldability of nickel combined with significantly higher electrical conductivities at potentially lower costs. Conductivities are typically 2-3 times that of nickel in most applications. These materials can be successfully joined to cells by resistance or laser welding as well as soldering.
TMI has also expanded this technology into Hybrid Automotive Battery applications. These new composites offer performance enhancements to improve discharge rates and safety. Depending upon the specific requirements of the application, TMI utilizes combinations of cladding, electroplating, and electron beam welding to create unique joining and current-carrying characteristics.
