Capacitive Coupling Device enables wireless charging systems.

Press Release Summary:

Capable of charging at 10 W, LXWS Series generates limited heat in wireless power transmission area and effectively suppresses noise. Wireless charging is accomplished through use of capacitive coupling, which replaces coils with transmitter and receiver simple electrodes. Integrating removal and error detection to ensure optimal system operation, LXWS Series enables charging systems for tablet PCs, mobile devices, music players, and other consumer electronics.

Murata Launches World's First Capacitive Coupling Device

TO ENABLE WIRELESS CHARGING SYSTEMS

Company Debuts New Module at CES 2012

Smyrna, GA, - Murata Electronics today debuted its new wireless power transmission module at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. The higher power capability of the LXWS series enables wireless charging systems for tablet PCs, mobile devices, music players, and a host of other consumer electronics. As these products require increased battery consumption to achieve higher levels of functionality, the challenge arises to ready them with the ability to charge quickly and wirelessly. To resolve that issue, Murata applied its circuit design and module manufacturing technologies to develop a capacitive coupling wireless charging module that is capable of charging at 10W, includes a high level of positioning freedom, and integrates removal and error detection to ensure optimal system operation.

For the design engineer, the incorporation of a very thin electrode (less than 0.1mm) with a miniaturized antenna structure decreases the thickness of the structure. Further, the LXWS series generates limited heat in the wireless power transmission area, effectively suppresses noise, and is easy to integrate into almost any mobile device. For the consumer, these benefits translate to being able to charge several different products on the same system at the same time without the need for a cable connection.

"This module makes wireless charging systems a reality," stated Jim Masui, Marketing Manager, Murata Electronics North America. "The market demand for such a product is growing exponentially. When you couple our technology and manufacturing expertise with the company's spirit for innovation, it is clear why Murata was the first one in the world to offer a capacitive coupling wireless solution."

As background, wireless charging is accomplished primarily through the use of either inductive or capacitive coupling. In the latter, coils are replaced with transmitter and receiver simple electrodes. With this and the technological advantages mentioned above, greater cost savings are realized. Moreover, Murata has incorporated more than 30 of its proprietary patents into this product line.

Samples of both the LXWS series' transmitter and receiver are available upon request. For pricing information, please contact Murata through www.murata-northamerica.com. Production volumes will be available beginning in the next three to six months.
