New Helitronic Vision tool grinder with linear motors
Walter Grinders comes to IMTS this year offering the prospect of productivity increases as high as 30% with its Helitronic Vision CNC tool grinder. Besides its shorter cycle times, the machine grinds carbide or HSS tools ranging from ⅛ to 12.6 inches (3 - 320 mm) in diameter with the world's highest levels of accuracy and surface finish.
All its five CNC axes - both rotary axes and the three linear axes - use direct drives. The linear motors offer unequalled positioning accuracy and move at up to 2,000 inches/min (50 m/min) with extremely high acceleration, minimizing non-grinding time. To get the most out of these extraordinary motors, WALTER put their patented and proven 3D gantry design into an "acceleration-proof" mineral casting-for both the machine base and the gantry. The unsurpassed dampening properties of this combination improves grinding precision and surface finish, particularly when trying to achieve the fastest possible grinds. The mineral casting also offers insensitivity to temperature fluctuations, which improves precision and increases productivity by virtually eliminating the need for a warm-up cycle.
The combination of the machine's gantry design, the use of mineral casting, and linear motors on every axis enables machining at substantially higher feed rates - coupled with improved quality and dramatically better grinding wheel life. The new Helitronic Tool Studio software offers unlimited programming flexibility plus the ability to setup while the machine grinds.
The Helitronic Vision CNC grinding machine can be equipped with both an automatic tool loader and a wheel changer, enabling flexible multiple-shift operation with minimal manning. For long loader runs, similar wheel packs can be changed as wheels wear. For mixed tool batches, different wheel packs can be loaded for different tool types. For large stock removals, roughing and finishing wheel packs can be loaded. For mixed tool materials, CBN and diamond wheel packs can both be auto-loaded.
