Dr. Barry Davidson Receives ASTM International Stinchcomb Award for Contributions to Composite Materials Standards

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.-Barry Davidson, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y., has received the Wayne W. Stinchcomb Memorial Award from ASTM International Committee D30 on Composite Materials. The Stinchcomb Award is presented every two years at the Committee D30 spring symposium to an individual who has made outstanding contributions in research, engineering, or teaching the technology of composite materials and who has provided outstanding service to Committee D30 or any other technical organization with emphasis on the study and advancement of composites. Davidson has been a member of ASTM International and Committee D30 since 1993. Davidson began his professional career as a design engineer at Rockwell International Space Systems Division in Downey, Calif., in 1981. He also worked as a project engineer at Rockwell, and as a research scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., before joining the faculty at Syracuse University as an assistant professor in 1990. He became associate professor in 1995 and Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith professor in 1999. Davidson's research focuses on the design, analysis and testing of composite materials, with emphasis in delamination growth in advanced polymeric composites. His research work has been supported by NASA, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Office of Naval Research, the Empire State Development Corp., the AT&T Foundation, the National Science Foundation, U.S. Army Intelligence Center, the National Institutes of Health, United Technologies Corp. and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Outside ASTM International, Davidson is an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He holds a B.S. in aerospace engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo, an M.S. in aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Texas A&M University.
