ASTM Standard aids testing of corrosion-resistant fasteners.

July 1, 2011 - Developed by Subcommittee G01.14 on Corrosion of Metals in Construction Materials, ASTM G198 will provide method of testing corrosion-resistant fasteners and their performance in contact with treated wood. According to Thomas Langill, chairman of G01.14, test method will give a relatively quick comparison of corrosion protection systems on driven fasteners in the microenvironment of treated wood and the potential corrosive chemicals that are used to protect wood materials.

Method of Testing Corrosion-Resistant Fasteners Is Subject of New ASTM Standard

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., - A new ASTM International standard will provide a method of testing corrosion-resistant fasteners and their performance in contact with treated wood. ASTM G198, Test Method for Determining the Relative Corrosion Performance of Driven Fasteners in Contact with Treated Wood, was developed by Subcommittee G01.14 on Corrosion of Metals in Construction Materials, part of ASTM International Committee G01 on Corrosion of Metals. "The value of this test method is that it will give a relatively quick comparison of corrosion protection systems on driven fasteners in the microenvironment of treated wood and the potential corrosive chemicals that are used to protect the wood materials," says Thomas Langill, technical director, American Galvanizers Association, and chairman of G01.14. "There are many labs and companies using various test methods to do this same task, and the release of ASTM G198 gives a universally accepted method to correlate the other tests." Langill says that G01.14 is actively looking for more participants to continue its work on corrosion protection materials in contact with treated wood. Future proposed standards on threaded fasteners and on sheet products such as joist hangers and post caps are planned.
