Petroleum Manual Wins Dudley Award, Salvatore J. Rand Receives Honor at D02 Meeting

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., - Salvatore J. Rand, Ph.D., a petroleum industry consultant based in North Fort Myers, Fla., has received the 2010 Charles B. Dudley Award for Manual 1, Significance of Tests for Petroleum Products: 7th Edition. Rand, an ASTM International fellow and member since 1983, accepted the award during the recent meetings of ASTM Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants. The award commemorates the society's first president and recognizes meritorious contributions to the ASTM literature. A member at large on the D02 executive subcommittee, Rand has been active in Committee D02 for many years. He is the developer of two ASTM Technical and Professional Training courses, Gasoline: Specifications, Testing and Technology, and Fuels Technology; he has taught them close to 100 times in various venues around the world. Rand has been second vice chairman of D02, chairman of Subcommittee D02.05 on Properties of Fuels, Petroleum Coke and Carbon Material, secretary of Subcommittee D02.05.0C on Color and Reactivity, and a member of the ASTM Committee on Technical Committee Operations (COTCO). He has been honored with a Service Award from the COTCO in 2008, the Lowrie B. Sargent Jr. Award in 2006, the George V. Dyroff Award of Honorary Committee D02 Membership in 2004, the Committee D02 Sydney D. Andrews Scroll of Achievement in 2003 and the ASTM International Award of Merit in 1999. Rand, retired from Texaco Research and Development in Beacon, N.Y., where he had directed the Fuels Test Laboratory. Rand provided technical information and services to Texaco installations worldwide on fuel distribution, marketing and operations; and laboratory inspection, auditing and personnel training. Author of several technical publications, Rand is a 50-year member of the American Chemical Society, where he is a past chairman of its Mid-Hudson Section. He earned a doctorate in physical chemistry and physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a bachelor's degree in chemistry and philosophy from Fordham University.
