New Volume of ASTM International's Skiing Trauma and Safety

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., 20 April 2009 - The latest volume of the popular ASTM International publication Skiing Trauma and Safety provides 21 peer-reviewed papers covering the latest information on skiing trauma and safety. Topics covered include:
Epidemiology - Several studies evaluated the prevalence and incidence of various alpine skiing injuries in several areas around the world, including the United States, France, Norway, Australia and Germany. Specific topics evaluated included lower leg fractures, the relationship of helmets to the patterns of injuries that lead to death in alpine skiing accidents, and knee injuries.
Head Injuries - Using an anthropometric testing device, two papers evaluate the influence of helmets in pediatric head and neck injuries and the kinematics of a snowboard fall.
Snow Sports Equipment - This section deals with injury rates related to releasable snowboard bindings, a computer simulation of consecutive ski turns, and a novel anti-slip pad for improving steering when exiting a ski lift on a snowboard.
Miscellaneous Topics - The remaining papers include a three-part study to evaluate the premise that ACL injury in alpine skiing more frequently occurs to the left side than the right; the assessment and identification of the functional constraints of young skiers as they recover from skiing accidents; the evaluation of objective measurement as a tool to assess and enhance visibility on poorly-lit runs; and computer simulations based on takeoff velocity to suggest guidelines for a design of the kicker used in these jumps.
