W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.-Papers are invited for the Fifth International Symposium on Contaminated Sediments: Restoration of the Aquatic Environment, to be held May 23-25, 2012, at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec City, Canada.
Sponsored by ASTM Committee D18 on Soil and Rock, the major objectives of the symposium are to:
Identify sources, types and behavior of contaminants; Discuss and share the state of the art of sustainable options for the management of contaminated sediments in marine and freshwater environments for restoration of surface water; Provide a forum to debate future directions and visions in terms of technical, environmental and economical perspectives; and Promote multilevel involvement and participation of stakeholders in restoration strategies.
The symposium aims to attract a wide variety of papers and audiences from multidisciplinary backgrounds. Specific topics to be covered would include, but not be limited to: source control; sustainability indicators; fate and transport of contaminants; ecotoxicology and bioavailability; port and harbour management; sediment quality assessment tools; beneficial reuse strategies for dredged materials; combined treatments; in situ and ex situ remediation technologies; natural recovery processes; sediment transport; risk assessment and decision making; sampling, monitoring and performance evaluation; habitat restoration and biodiversity; sediment and site characterization; marine sediments; fresh water sediments; and policies and regulations.
To submit a presentation, presenters/authors must submit a 200-300 word preliminary abstract by Dec. 15, 2010, online at www.astm.org/D18symp0512.htm.
The abstract should include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. The symposium co-chairs will notify you by Feb. 15, 2011, of your paper's acceptability for presentation. If the preliminary abstract is accepted, the presenter/author will be requested to submit a final abstract several months before the symposium.
Symposium presenters are required to submit their papers to the Journal of ASTM International (JAI). JAI is an online, peer-reviewed journal for the international scientific and engineering community (www.astm.org/JAI). Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for JAI are due online no later than July 15, 2011.
