Presentations are being sought for workshop on determination of wax content and wax appearance temperature of crude oils, which will be held June 21, 2011 in Baltimore, MD. General objective of said workshop is to provide technical forum for presentations and discussions pertaining to current research and practices relating to determination of wax content and wax appearance temperature (WAT) of crude oil. Forum will also provide future direction and suggest new standards.

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.-A Workshop on Determination of Wax Content and Wax Appearance Temperature of Crude Oils will be held on June 21, 2011, at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront in Baltimore, Md. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, the workshop will be held in conjunction with the June 19-23 standards development meetings of the committee.
The general objective of the workshop is to provide a technical forum for presentations and discussions pertaining to current research and practices relating to determination of the wax content and wax appearance temperature (WAT) of crude oil. The forum will also provide future direction and suggest new standards for ASTM Subcommittee D02.02 on Hydrocarbon Measurement for Custody Transfer to investigate.
Determination of the wax content and wax appearance temperature of crude oils is becoming increasingly important in planning for their optimum handling during production, transportation and storage. Standard methods do not exist for determination of either wax or WAT. UOP 46, a method currently widely used worldwide with various modifications for wax determination, has been withdrawn without replacement. A number of methods are used for determination of WAT, including differential scanning calorimetry, crossed polar microscopy and viscosity, but none have been standardized and the techniques employed vary widely.
Presentations on, but not limited to, the above topics are sought. Interested participants must submit a 250-300 word abstract by Nov. 26, 2010, via e-mail to workshop chair Harry Giles at dir.coqa@verizon.net. ASTM will not issue a formal publication of the presentations in a separate printed volume. Presenters are welcome to submit their formal papers to the Journal of ASTM International (JAI). JAI is an online, peer-reviewed journal for the international scientific and engineering community (www.astm.org/JAI).
Online registration opens approximately eight weeks before the workshop and closes June 15, 2011. There is no fee to attend the workshop for ASTM members, session chairs, presenters and students with a valid I.D.
