Press release date: July 6, 2010

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Safway Services' Systems(TM) Scaffold has passed all seismic qualification tests of Class 1E equipment and is in full compliance with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standard 344-1987.

Performed in May 2010, seismic qualification tests evaluated the scaffold's ability to withstand earthquake-like conditions. Safway's seismic qualification test input was greater than any other known seismic qualification test of scaffold in its class.

None of Safway's equipment was broken, damaged, or became dislodged during any of the tests, including diagonals, toeboards, and plank.

For the tests, standard scaffold ties secured the scaffold to a central steel column, simulating a typical steel structure. The scaffold was only secured in two locations and only in the horizontal direction. No vertical ties or bolting of screw jacks was done as in other scaffold tests. The equipment tested included: steel plank, vertical diagonals, toeboards, an access ladder, and screw jacks.

ANSI/IEEE standard 344-1987 requires the equipment tested to withstand:

o Five operational basis earthquakes (OBE): an earthquake that could be expected to affect the site of a nuclear reactor, but for which the plant's power production equipment is designed to remain functional without undue risk to public health and safety. o One safe shutdown earthquake (SSE): the maximum earthquake potential for which certain structures, systems, and components, important to safety, are designed to sustain and remain functional.

The seismic tests were performed at Clark Dynamic Test Laboratory in Jefferson Hills, Pa.
