W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.-There are currently several uses of alloy UNS R56320 in surgical applications and implants, but the only ASTM surgical standard for the alloys covers tubing [ASTM F2146, Specification for Wrought Titanium-3Aluminum-2.5Vanadium Alloy Seamless Tubing for Surgical Implant Applications (UNS R56320)]. A proposed new ASTM standard will reflect the more widespread use of UNS R56320.

ASTM WK34079, Specification for Wrought Titanium-3Aluminum-2.5Vanadium Alloy for Surgical Implant Applications (UNS R56320), is being developed by Subcommittee F04.12 on Metallurgical Materials. The subcommittee is part of ASTM International Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices.

"Currently the medical devices industry uses this alloy and relies on manufacturers to meet customer specific standards," says Mark Ransick, staff test engineer, Ethicon Endo-Surgery, and a member of F04. "Once approved, the proposed new specification will ensure that there are medical grade standards that can be applied to this alloy for use in surgery."

Ransick says that suppliers of titanium and purchasers who use the alloy in medical devices or implants will be the primary users of the proposed standard.

All interested parties are invited to participate in the ongoing development of ASTM WK34079.
