Kennametal, Inc.
1600 Technology Way, P.O. Box 231
Latrobe, PA, 15650-0231
USA

Press release date: March 1, 2011

LATROBE, Pa., - Kennametal Inc. (NYSE: KMT) has announced that its revolutionary Beyond Blast metalcutting technology has been honored with a 2011 Carnegie Science Center Award in the category of Advanced Manufacturing. The Carnegie Science Center established the awards program in 1997 to recognize and promote outstanding science and technology achievements in Western Pennsylvania. With this year's award, Kennametal and its employees have been honored nine times in the program's 15 years.

Beyond Blast represents a significant advance for Kennametal customers, delivering, in some cases, as much as a 300 percent improvement in productivity. By channeling coolant through the insert, Beyond Blast delivers the coolant not merely in the general area of the cutting zone, but directly to the juncture where the tool edge meets the material. This breakthrough ensures longer tool life, better cutting performance and chip control, and more efficient coolant delivery, heat transfer and lubricity.

In addition to improving part-production processes, the innovative Beyond Blast technology decreases power consumption and improves coolant management, thereby mitigating a manufacturer's impact on the environment.

Because of its value in the manufacturing process and benefit to the planet, Beyond Blast demonstrates how innovative thinking can meet the dual objectives of increased productivity and decreased environmental impact.

"Without question, Beyond Blast represents a revolutionary moment in the history of manufacturing, and we are thrilled to receive the Advanced Manufacturing Award in honor of our commitment to innovation," said Kennametal Chairman, President and CEO Carlos Cardoso. "At Kennametal, we have a long history of delivering value through innovation, and Beyond Blast will benefit our customers in that same tradition."

Kennametal Inc. (NYSE: KMT) delivers productivity to customers seeking peak performance in demanding environments by providing innovative custom and standard wear-resistant solutions. This proven productivity is enabled through our advanced materials sciences and application knowledge. Our commitment to a sustainable environment provides additional value to our customers. Companies operating in everything from airframes to coal mining, from engines to oil wells and from turbochargers to construction recognize Kennametal for extraordinary contributions to their value chains. In fiscal year 2010, customers bought approximately $1.9 billion of Kennametal products and services - delivered by our approximately 11,000 talented employees doing business in more than 60 countries - with more than 50 percent of these revenues coming from outside North America.
