Finetool Saudi Arabia Gains Advantages with IV Bottle Septum Molded from New PolyOne GLS TPE

DÃœSSELDORF, Germany – PolyOne GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers, a global leader in high-performance, custom-formulated thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) solutions, today announced that Finetool Saudi Arabia Company Limited of Jeddah selected new Versaflex™ HC TPE for the resealing septum in its new insert-molded IV bottle. By choosing Versaflex™ HC over traditional materials, Finetool not only improved the resealing and coring performance of the septum, but were also able to reduce processing steps for a significant economic advantage.

"We designed our new cap to meet the stringent performance, compliance and cost requirements of our OEM, a leading producer of sterile IV solutions," said Ahmed Noah, general manager of Finetool S.A. "The new PolyOne Versaflex HC material delivers better processability than rubber for cost advantages, plus excellent resealing capability and cleanliness. We are very pleased with the results obtained with this TPE."

"Versaflex HC gives customers, such as Finetool, a unique alternative to vulcanized rubber septums and stoppers," said Charles Page, global marketing director, PolyOne GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers. "One of its notable advantages is streamlined processing that replaces multiple operations with one injection molding step. We collaborated with Finetool on this successful application and look forward to a continued relationship focused on other packaging innovations."

In addition to manufacturing cost savings, Versaflex™ HC delivers proven resealing capability and resistance to coring – the tendency for a material to produce tiny fragments when penetrated by a needle – with 6mm IV infusion spikes and needles 16 gauge and smaller, even after multiple uses. The new material provides superior cleanliness by avoiding sulfur, zinc and other cross-linking agents used in curing rubber, which can potentially leach into a drug product. The formulation meets the requirements of the ISO 15759 standard for medical infusion equipment, and can be steam autoclaved using temperatures up to 121°C.

Finetool also benefitted from prompt service and local technical support provided by PolyOne, which offers commercial, logistical and technical support to stopper and cap producers on a global basis.

The Finetool cap is on display at the PolyOne stand (Hall 8a / Stand J13) at K 2013, together with Versaflex™ HC TPEs and other packaging application solutions.
