W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., 18 December 2008-Dr. Walter J. Rossiter of W.J. Rossiter & Associates, Clarksburg, Md., has received the 2008 William C. Cullen Award from ASTM International Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing. The committee honored Rossiter for "his distinguished contributions and personal commitment to Committee D08 and to the field of roofing and waterproofing through his extensive research, prolific publication and exemplary leadership."

A member of ASTM International for more than 30 years, Rossiter works on several D08 subcommittees and is chair of Subcommittee D08.92. He also serves on Committees C16 on Thermal Insulation and E06 on Performance of Buildings. For his contributions, Rossiter has been honored with the ASTM Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow in 1994 and the Walter C. Voss Award in 2002.

Rossiter, who holds a B.S. in chemistry from Boston College and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara, spent more than 35 years as a research chemist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) until his retirement in 2006. He specializes in the performance of roofing materials and systems, building materials, thermal insulations, and the in-situ analysis of lead in paint and dust.

Outside of ASTM International, Rossiter is an honorary member of RCI (formerly the Roof Consultants Institute) and a member of the American Chemical Society, the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB) and the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures (RILEM); he is a past chair of the joint CIB/RILEM Committee on Roofing Materials and Systems.

ASTM International meets the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles for the development of international standards: coherence, consensus, development dimension, effectiveness, impartiality, openness, relevance and transparency. ASTM standards are accepted and used in research and development, product testing, quality systems and commercial transactions around the globe.
