Press release date: May 11, 2010

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.-A symposium on Condensation in Exterior Building Wall Systems will be held Oct. 10-11, 2010, at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings, the symposium will be held in conjunction with the Oct. 10-13 standards development meetings of the committee.

Control of condensing water in the building envelope has been an ever-increasing concern as thermal insulation systems evolve, as interior air quality (IAQ) demands grow, and as concern for occupants' health increase in light of the potential for mold and mildew within buildings. To address these concerns, ASTM has always been a leader in the study of condensation control and in the development of test methods to determine performance of buildings to help control condensation.

Condensation control systems today include insulating materials and air control materials that were unavailable just a few years ago. Design of condensation control today has been greatly aided by computer simulation modeling, yet condensation problems still occur. The symposium continues the traditions of Committee E06 study and debate on this topic.

A tutorial session on condensation, which consists of two sessions intended to provide basic information about condensation in building walls, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon prior to the start of the symposium at 1 p.m. It is recommended, but not required, that symposium registrants attend the tutorial session. Both sessions will enhance attendees understanding of building science and successful building enclosure assembly design.

Online registration is now open and will close Oct. 6, 2010. For more information, including a technical program, visit http://www.astm.org/E06symp1010.htm.

The fee to attend the workshop for ASTM members is $330 USD for online registration and $355 USD for onsite registration. The fee for non-ASTM members is $380 USD online and $405 USD on site. The fee is waived for presenters, session chairs and students with a valid I.D.

Additional technical information is available from symposium co-chairs Bruce S. Kaskel, Wiss. Janney, Elstner Associates, Chicago, Ill. (phone: 312-372-0555; bkaskel@wje.com); or Robert J. Kudder, Raths, Raths & Johnson, Willowbrook, Ill. (phone: 630-325-6160; rjkuddder@rrj.com).

ASTM International is one of the largest international standards development and delivery systems in the world. ASTM International meets the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles for the development of international standards: coherence, consensus, development dimension, effectiveness, impartiality, openness, relevance and transparency.
