Press release date: December 30, 2009

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., - Papers are invited for a symposium on "Uncertainty in Fire Standards and What to Do about It," to be held June 16, 2011, at the Marriott Anaheim in Anaheim, Calif. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee E05 on Fire Standards, the symposium will be held in conjunction with the June 12-15 standards development meetings of the committee.

The objective of the symposium is to discuss different issues related to uncertainty in fire standards, and will cover how different parties - testing laboratories, enforcement authorities, manufacturers, practicing engineers - incorporate uncertainty into their use of results from fire safety tests and calculations.

Discussion will also include some of the larger implications - legal, technical, ethical - for these different approaches, and provide overviews of some of the latest technical guidance for handling uncertainty contained in ASTM standards and in other standards and documents. By the end of the symposium, attendees will be better able to discharge their own responsibilities for quantification and consideration of uncertainty in their own areas of responsibilities.

Interested presenters must submit a 250-300 word preliminary abstract online at www.astm.org/E05symp611.htm by July 16, 2010. Symposium chair John R. Hall Jr. will notify you by Oct. 16, 2010, of your paper's acceptability for presentation. Symposium presenters are required to submit their papers to the Journal of Testing and Evaluation (JTE). JTE is a peer-reviewed journal for the international scientific and engineering community (www.astm.org/JOTE).

For more information, visit the symposium home page on the ASTM Web site (www.astm.org/E05symp611.htm). For additional technical information, contact symposium chair John R. Hall Jr., National Fire Protection Association, Quincy, Mass. (phone: 617-984-7460; jhall@nfpa.org).
