Analog Devices Teams With Legend Silicon To Ready First Mobile TV Receiver Solution For China's New Digital Broadcast Standard

Companies Demonstrate Platform Combining Legend Silicon's Demodulators with ADI's Integrant RF Tuners to Enable TV Reception in Mobile Devices Supporting China's Recently Announced Digital Television Standard

Analog Devices Inc. (NYSE: ADI), a global leader in high-performance semiconductors for signal-processing applications, today announced it has collaborated with Legend Silicon Corp., a leading supplier of silicon solutions for broadband wireless broadcasting, to accelerate the development of mobile TV receivers for China with the industry's first digital TV standard-compliant receiver solution. The companies will demonstrate this solution for China's newly established terrestrial TV broadcast standard at the International Mobitv Summit & Show 2006 in Shenzhen, China, on September 1 and 2. The new digital terrestrial TV broadcasting standard, coded GB 20600-2006, was announced by the Standardization Administration of China on August 30, 2006, and will come into effect on August 1, 2007. Legend Silicon is the first company to provide a demodulator compliant with the standard.

Coupling demodulators from Legend with low-power RF tuners from ADI's Integrant Technologies, which is a leading supplier of mobile TV tuners, will enable customers to quickly integrate digital reception into a range of portable devices, including portable media players (PMPs), PDAs, smart phones and laptops. Integrant Technologies is an Analog Devices company specializing in low-power radio tuners that allow portable communications, computer, and consumer devices to receive digital TV and digital radio broadcasts. ADI completed its acquisition of Integrant Technologies in July 2006.

Legend Silicon's demodulator was designed from the ground up to provide services for both fixed terrestrial high-definition television (HDTV) and mobile broadcasts. Based on TDS-OFDM (time domain synchronous - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) technology, this solution excels in providing continuous reception in the challenging conditions mobile applications present, as well as accommodating fixed applications in urban environments comprised of severe multipath interference.

"As the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing approach, we expect the Chinese market to rapidly deploy digital broadcast TV services with millions of consumer electronic devices equipped to receive digital broadcast signals," said John Hussey, vice president of High Speed Signal Processing, Analog Devices. "Initial rollout will begin in set-top boxes, automobiles, and televisions, followed soon after by high-end PDAs, smart phones and portable media players. By 2008, the total market size of mobile TV applications in China is expected to be upwards of tens of millions of units. Ultimately the technology will be adapted for mass-market mobile phones."

The joint demonstration platform meets the low-power, performance and time-to-market requirements that will be needed to support digital reception in portable platforms. Battery efficiency, small form factors, and lower-cost solutions are enabled by the low-power Integrant RF tuner, which will support mobile extensions and applications of the Chinese digital broadcast standard. Analog Devices collaborated with Legend Silicon for its market-leading, second-generation silicon (LS8913) to handle the demodulation of digital broadcasts. ADI also is leveraging its low-power Blackfin(R) processor to perform the MPEG-2 decoding and multimedia processing functions in mobile TV applications.
