July 24, 2012 - ASTM International Committee D22 on Air Quality presented Moyer D. Thomas Award to Kevin Ashley, Ph.D., for his contributions to standardization of sampling and analysis of atmospheres. ASTM International member since 1991, Ashley works on multiple D22 subcommittees and is chairman of D22.04 on Workplace Air Quality. ASTM fellow is also member of multiple committees, has authored 110+ scientific publications, and holds three U.S. patents.

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. - ASTM International Committee D22 on Air Quality has presented the Moyer D. Thomas Award to Kevin Ashley, Ph.D., senior research chemist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ashley was honored for his outstanding contributions to the standardization of the sampling and analysis of atmospheres.

A member of ASTM International since 1991, Ashley works on multiple D22 subcommittees and is chairman of D22.04 on Workplace Air Quality. He is also a member of Committees E06 on Performance of Buildings and E56 on Nanotoechnology. An ASTM fellow, he received the Award of Merit from Committee E06 in 2003; an Award of Excellence from the ASTM Committee on Publications in 2006; and the D22 Award of Appreciation in 2010.

After completing his Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City in 1987, Ashley became an assistant professor in the chemistry department at San Jose State University in San Jose, Calif. In 1991, he joined the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, CDC/NIOSH, as a research chemist, and was promoted to senior research chemist in 2002. He also holds an M.S. in chemistry from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, and a B.S. in biology from the University of Arizona, Tucson.

The author of more than 110 scientific publications, Ashley holds three U.S. patents. His research focuses on analytical methods development for the determination of chemical agents in occupational environments (workplace air and surfaces).

In addition to ASTM International, Ashley is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Analytical Accreditation Board of the American Industrial Hygiene Association Laboratory Accreditation Programs. He is also managing editor of the NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene.

Ashley has received numerous honors and awards over the span of his professional and academic career, including the Federal Service Excellence Award - Professional/Scientific from the Cincinnati Federal Executive Board in 2012; Outstanding Service Award from the Cincinnati Section of the American Chemical Society in 2011; Excellence in Technology Transfer Award from the Federal Laboratory Consortium in 2008; Alice Hamilton Award for Excellence in Occupational Safety and Health from CDC/NIOSH in 2007; and the Charles Shepard Award Nomination for Outstanding Scientific Paper from CDC in 2007.
