Press release date: March 22, 2012

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., -A workshop on Physical Constants of Hydrocarbons, Especially the Boiling Points of n-Paraffins, will be held June 25 at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square in San Francisco, Calif. Sponsored by ASTM International Subcommittee D02.04 on Hydrocarbon Analysis, part of Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, the workshop will be held in conjunction with the June standards development meetings of the committee.

The workshop presenter, Dr. Neil Gilles of the Design Institute for Physical Properties (DIPPR) at Brigham Young University, will discuss the procedures used at BYU to add new chemicals to the database. The evaluation process and some of the many interproperty and interchemical consistency checks will be described. A system that is currently being used to efficiently determine the extent of re-evaluation warranted by newly published data will be discussed, and tools that use the growing amounts of interrelated data in the database to accomplish continual quality enhancement will be reviewed. Finally, the use of interchemical relationships in evaluating constant property values and temperature-dependent correlations of chemicals belonging to well-defined families will be examined. Specifically, recent recommendations for the normal boiling temperature of the members of the n-alkane family will be addressed in detail.

Online registration opens approximately eight weeks before the workshop and closes June 20. There is no fee to attend the workshop. Visit www.astm.org/MEETINGS/COMMIT/d02wkshp0612.htm for more information.

Additional technical information is available from workshop chairman Dan Villalanti, Triton Analytics Corp., Houston, Texas (phone: 281-578-2289; dan.villalanti@tritonanalytics.com).
