Press release date: June 3, 2011

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., - A Workshop on Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation Emissions Testing will be held Oct. 31, 2011, at the Tampa Marriott Waterside in Tampa, Fla. Sponsored by ASTM International Subcommittee D22.05 on Indoor Air, the workshop will be held in conjunction with the October standards development meetings of ASTM Committee D22 on Air Quality. Subcommittee D22.05 is holding the workshop to present and discuss organic chemical emission testing methods for spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation. While development of a standard for small chamber testing method of VOC emissions from SPF under appropriate environmental conditions is planned as part of this effort, a panel will also present new results on the following topics: o Application of heated micro-scale chambers for testing of SPF insulation;
o Air sampling and sensitive analytical techniques for capturing and measuring methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI); and
o Amine catalysts, flame retardants and other potential constituents of SPF insulation. Discussions are planned regarding these topics and other innovative approaches for answering important questions regarding IAQ compliance testing of SPF insulation and the establishment of building re-occupancy times after installation of SPF products. The data and discussions from the workshop will be used towards the development of one or more ASTM standards related to the production of test samples representative of both closed-cell and open-cell SPF products and to the short and longer term testing of these products for their emissions of chemicals of potential concern. Online registration opens approximately eight weeks before the workshop. There is no fee to attend the workshop. For more information, visit www.astm.org/D22work1011.htm. Additional technical information is available from workshop chairman John Sebroski (phone: 412-777-3420; john.sebroski@bayer.com) or D22.05 chairman Al Hodgson (phone: 510-236-2325; ahodgson@berkeleyanalytical.com). If you have pertinent data that you are interested in presenting at the workshop, please contact John or Al by Sept. 1, 2011.
