Press release date: March 2, 2012

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.-Papers are invited for a symposium on Next-Generation Thermal Insulation Challenges and Opportunities, to be held Oct. 23-24, 2013. The symposium will be held at the Hyatt Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Fla., in conjunction with the October standards development meetings of ASTM International Committee C16 on Thermal Insulation.

This symposium will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of current research in the field of insulation materials and systems. This includes innovations in material performance and installation, as well as advances that specifically address the challenges of achieving optimal long-term performance. The target audience includes members of C16, insulation manufacturers, insulation installers, national laboratories, academic institutions, and testing laboratories. Subject areas of interest are:

  • Theory of Heat Transfer in Insulations-opportunities for advanced technologies
  • Advances in the evaluation of thermal insulation properties-statistical implications
  • In-situ performance of building insulation-guidance for needed improvements
  • Impact of installation on the thermal performance of thermal insulation: - Corrosion under insulation; - Effect of air leakage and moisture on thermal performance; and - Industrial insulation materials and applications.
  • Advanced insulation materials and systems
  • Long-term thermal performance of cellular plastics
  • Quality Control/quality assurance
  • Environmentally-friendly insulation
  • Phase change materials
  • Water vapor transport

To participate in the symposium, presenters/authors must submit a 250-300 word preliminary abstract at www.astm.org/MEETINGS/COMMIT/c16cfp1013.htm by Oct. 23, 2012. The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. The symposium co-chairmen will notify you via postal mail by Nov. 16, 2012, of your paper's acceptability for presentation at the symposium.

Symposium presenters are required to submit their papers to the Selected Technical Paper (STP), an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community. Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due online no later than Oct. 23, 2013. Additional technical information is available from symposium co-chairmen Therese Stovall, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Knoxville, Tenn. (phone: 865-574-0329; stovalltk@ornl.gov); and Thomas Whitaker, Industrial Insulation Group, Brunswick, Ga. (phone: 970-858-6211; whitakert@iig-llc.com).

ASTM International is one of the largest international standards development and delivery systems in the world. ASTM International meets the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles for the development of international standards: coherence, consensus, development dimension, effectiveness, impartiality, openness, relevance and transparency.
