Beck, principal analytical chemist at ATI Wah Chang in Albany, OR. The award recognizes his technical contributions to Committee E01, especially in the field of titanium, zirconium, tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, niobium, hafnium, and rhenium.

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., 12 March 2009-Gary L. Beck, principal analytical chemist at ATI Wah Chang in Albany, Ore., has received the ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow from Committee E01 on Analytical Chemistry for Metals, Ores and Related Materials. The Award of Merit is the highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities.
Beck was honored for his outstanding technical contributions to Committee E01, especially in the field of titanium, zirconium, tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, niobium, hafnium and rhenium.
A member of ASTM International for more than 30 years, Beck is active on a number of E01 subcommittees and currently serves as vice chair of E01.06 and as chair of E01.93. The committee has recognized Beck's work in the past with an award of appreciation in 2003 and the H.V. Churchill Award in 2007. He also serves on Committees B10 on Reactive and Refractory Metals and Alloys, D19 on Water and F40 on Declarable Substances in Materials.
Beck began his career at ATI Wah Chang in 1965. During his more than 40 years with the company, he held the positions of chief spectrographer and laboratory manager. In the latter role, he was responsible for all aspects of the analytical services laboratory. In 2004, he retired as laboratory manager and accepted the part-time position of principal analytical chemist.
In addition to ASTM International, Beck is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Society for Applied Spectroscopy. A graduate of Willamette University, Salem, Ore., where he received a bachelor's degree in chemistry, Beck now serves as executive director of the Willamette University Institute for Continued Learning.
