W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., 15 June 2009-Jeffrey Goldfinger, director of unmanned systems applications in the Sensors & Simulation Group at L-3 Communications Corp. in Arlington, Texas, is one of two recipients of the 2009 ASTM International President's Leadership Award.

Established in 2007, the President's Leadership Award recognizes individuals early in their ASTM career who have significantly advanced the Society's mission through extraordinary accomplishment, example and vision. Michael Brisson, senior technical advisor at Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, Aiken, S.C., was also honored this year. These two individuals were selected out of an eligible pool of about one-third of the total ASTM membership of 30,000.

A member of ASTM International since 2003, Goldfinger is vice chair of Committee F38 on Unmanned Aircraft Systems. In addition to his exceptional leadership skills and contributions to the development of ASTM International standards for UAS, he has promoted the global recognition of F38 standards to regulators, governments and industry through presentations at various UAS forums. He has also worked with the Department of Defense and product/service providers for the acceptance of F38 standards.

Goldfinger spent 20 years as a Naval Flight Officer in the U.S. Navy, where he was a qualified Pioneer UAV internal pilot, accumulating more than 1,500 flight hours in various carrier-based tactical aircraft. Since his retirement from the Navy in 2002, he has provided consulting and flight operation services to both U.S. government and industry consumers, with a focus on manned and unmanned flight operations for military and homeland security operations. He assumed his role at L-3 Communications in 2006.

In addition to ASTM International, Goldfinger is a member of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI). He holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.

Established in 1898, ASTM International is one of the largest international standards development and delivery systems in the world. ASTM International meets the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles for the development of international standards: coherence, consensus, development dimension, effectiveness, impartiality, openness, relevance and transparency. ASTM standards are accepted and used in research and development, product testing, quality systems and commercial transactions around the globe.
