W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., 25 June 2009 - Michael Brisson, principal technical advisor at Savannah River Nuclear Solutions LLC in Aiken, S.C., is one of two recipients of the 2009 ASTM International President's Leadership Award.

Established in 2007, the President's Leadership Award recognizes individuals early in their ASTM career who have significantly advanced the Society's mission through extraordinary accomplishment, example and vision. Jeffrey Goldfinger, director of unmanned systems applications in the Sensors & Simulation Group at L-3 Communications Corp., Arlington, Texas, was also honored this year. These two individuals were selected out of an eligible pool of about one-third of the total ASTM membership of 30,000.

Brisson, who joined ASTM International in 2005, currently serves as secretary of both Committee D22 on Air Quality and its Subcommittee D22.01 on Quality Control. As a leading researcher in the field of beryllium sampling and analysis, his research has formed the basis of several ASTM standards on air quality. The committee recognized his contributions with the Award of Excellence in 2007 and the Award of Appreciation in 2008.

In addition to Committee D22, Brisson also serves on Committees C26 on Nuclear Fuel Cycle, D18 on Soil and Rock, and E06 on Performance of Buildings. He has contributed to the organization of Committee D22 symposia and has had three papers published in the Journal of ASTM International (JAI).

Brisson spent his early career as a chemist for the state of South Carolina and SmithKline Beecham and he began his work with the Savannah River Site in 1988. In his current role at Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, his focus is on spectroscopic and chomatographic techniques in nuclear applications and he plays an advisory role in the design of new nuclear laboratory facilities.

Outside ASTM International, Brisson is a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Industrial Hygiene Association. He holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the College of Charleston, Charleston, S.C., and a master's degree in hazardous waste management from National Technological University, Fort Collins, Colo.

Established in 1898, ASTM International is one of the largest international standards development and delivery systems in the world. ASTM International meets the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles for the development of international standards: coherence, consensus, development dimension, effectiveness, impartiality, openness, relevance and transparency. ASTM standards are accepted and used in research and development, product testing, quality systems and commercial transactions around the globe.
