ASTM Award of Merit goes to John Bailey Jr. on Carbon Black.

May 14, 2009 - John A. Bailey Jr., quality systems manager at Continental Carbon Co. in Houston, TX, has received the Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow from ASTM International. ASTM Committee D24 on Carbon Black recognized his contributions to ASTM standards activities, specifically his leadership and efforts in the area of sampling and statistical measurements as well as the development of new analytical standards.

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., 13 May 2009-John A. Bailey Jr., quality systems manager at Continental Carbon Co. in Houston, Texas, has received the Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow from ASTM International. The Award of Merit is ASTM's highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities.

ASTM Committee D24 on Carbon Black recognized Bailey for his exceptional leadership and his contributions in the area of sampling and statistical measurements and the development of new analytical standards.

A member of ASTM International since 1988, Bailey is the current vice chair of Committee D24 and chairs two of its subcommittees. For his exceptional service to the committee, he received the D24 Distinguished Service Award in 1998. In addition to his work with D24, he also serves on Committee D11 on Rubber, where he leads the subcommittee on statistical methods, and Committee E11 on Quality and Statistics.

A graduate of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, Ind., where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, Bailey has been with Continental Carbon Co. for more than 27 years, first joining the staff as production superintendent at the company's plant in Ponca City, Okla., in 1982. He then held the positions of plant quality manger and SPC coordinator before moving to Continental Carbon's home office where he assumed his current role in 1991.

Outside ASTM International, Bailey is a senior member of the American Society for Quality, where he has been ASQ certified as a reliability engineer, quality engineer and quality auditor.

ASTM International meets the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles for the development of international standards: coherence, consensus, development dimension, effectiveness, impartiality, openness, relevance and transparency. ASTM standards are accepted and used in research and development, product testing, quality systems and commercial transactions around the globe.
