Sherwin-Williams Offers Industry's First Class B-Rated Zinc-Epoxy Coating System For Structural And Support Steel

Steel Spec(TM) Epoxy Primer Together With Zinc Clad(R) II Plus Inorganic Zinc Rich Coating Offer Exception al Labor-Savings (CLEVELAND-September 21,2004) - Sherwin-Williams Industrial and Marine Coatings group offers the industry's only Class-B rated coating system that meets slip coefficient performance standards for bolted connections per ASTM and AISC specifications. This system consists of an inorganic zinc rich coating with an epoxy topcoat. Use of this coating system offers enormous labor savings, because fabrication shops no longer have to tape-off the structural steel slip-critical connection areas when an epoxy intermediate coating is applied over the inorganic zinc. The inorganic zinc, Zinc Clad(R) II Plus Inorganic Zinc Rich Coating, is a solvent-based, three component, inorganic ethyl silicate, zinc rich coating that is a fast drying, high solids, low VOC coating with 82% by weight of zinc dust in the dry film. In addition to meeting Class-B requirements for slip coefficient performance standards when used as part of a system with Steel Spec(TM) Epoxy Primer, it also meets Class B requirements (0.67) and AASHTOM -300-98 specifications when used as a single coat. It is ideal as a one-coat maintenance coating or as a permanent primer for severe corrosive environments in pH range 5-9 and may be used in immersion service in fresh and de-mineralized non- potable water applications. Zinc Clad II Plus Inorganic Zinc Rich Coating may be applied by conventional or airless spray and dries to handle in 20 minutes at 77°F. It is ideal for use over prepared blasted steel for shop or field application. Steel-Spec Epoxy Primer is the topcoat of this Class B rated system. It is a low VOC, corrosion-resistant coating that offers fast drying with fast handle time. In addition to meeting Class- B requirements for slip coefficient performance standards when used as part of a system with Zinc Clad II Plus, it also meets Class B requirements (0.52) when used as a single coat. Steel Spec Epoxy Primer can be applied at temperatures as low as 35°F for an extended application window. It may be applied by brush, roller or airless spray equipment, dries to touch in 15 minutes and can be topcoated in just two hours at 77°F. Steel Spec Epoxy Primer is an ideal primer for marine, bridge and heavy-duty industrial applications such as power plants.
