OMI International's Latest Yard Management Solution Extends Product Visibility and Traceability for Managing Yard and Dock Resources

Yard, Asset and Dock Management System Provides A New Level of Visibility and Control for Products, Equipment, Labor Resources and Space

Dallas - May 28, 2002 - OMI International, a leading provider of supply chain management solutions, today released MDS - Mobile Distribution System, Version 4.1, of their real-time, wireless yard, asset and dock management system. This latest release advances the level of resource optimization and visibility by enabling real-time asset and equipment cycle counting, "guardless" gate entry, inter-facility transfer capability, multi-door trailer loading, multi-yard management and the ability to configure pad locations dynamically based on utilization. Now installed in over 25 locations worldwide, the MDS solution enables Expert System Logic to direct and control activities real-time while tracking and monitoring all trailer and labor activity in a yard and dock facility.

MDS is a stand-alone application with real-time interfaces to a wide range of SCM/SCE/WMS/TMS applications and fully integrates warehouse and transportation management product data to schedule inbound and outbound yard/dock activity. The application is designed for Windows NT/2000 and can run in either Microsoft's SQL Server(TM) or Citrix server environments. With the Citrix server offering, clients can now run Windows applications on non-Windows machines reducing the total cost of the solution. MDS effectively utilizes a range of technologies from bar code and key data entry to active and passive RFID tags and Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) technology.

"Our global client base is looking for any and all reductions in their supply chain costs and increases in efficiency and visibility," OMI's Executive Vice President Gerry Lisee said. "With this new release of MDS, our clients will see an entirely new level of functionality as well as a rapid return on their investment. This new version brings yet another degree of optimization and control to large, multi-dock and satellite yard environments that are commonly a part of high volume consumer goods distribution centers."

Leading clients including Giant Eagle, Safeway (UK), The Kroger Co., and Associated Food Stores realize benefits including an average savings per yard ranging from $300,000 - $500,000. Savings can be attributed to productivity improvements via the reduction in the number of mules, trailers and idle time in addition to better dock utilization, reduction in spoilage, fuel consumption and yard moves. The addition of an innovative labor management system within MDS has provided a distinct competitive advantage through improved utilization of labor with an average of 25-40% reduction in idle time.
