WysDM Software Adds Business Awareness Functionality to Data Protection Management Suite

Integration of Application Discovery Capabilities Transforms Data Protection Management from Technical Tool to Business Solution

STORAGE NETWORKING WORLD, ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 1 / - WysDM Software, Inc., the leading provider of innovative data protection management (DPM) solutions, announced today it has enhanced its software suite, comprising the WysDM for Backups(TM) and WysDM for Fileservers(TM) solutions, to include application discovery capabilities that provide reporting and analysis to meet critical business requirements. This added functionality bridges the gap between technical requirements and business objectives, by enabling organizations to gather information associated with applications, recovery points, and restore times to ensure regulatory compliance and business continuity.

"Adding application discovery capabilities to WysDM's data protection management platform is a smart move," said Lauren Whitehouse, analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "The more information a company can collect about its entire backup and recovery infrastructure, the more accurately it can define potential pitfalls in the system that could impact business continuity. By building business-aware functionality into its software, WysDM continues to distinguish itself in the marketplace with innovative products that enable companies to have greater control over their corporate storage environments."

"As the importance of data protection increases, especially with the exponential growth of persistent data (information that has aged to a point where it is infrequently modified, but still needs to be retained), organizations need a solution that can tackle complex regulatory, service level, and integration issues," said Aloke Guha, CTO, COPAN Systems. "With a technology platform that provides comprehensive visibility into data protection issues, WysDM is addressing the need for users to gain control over their data protection environments with the addition of business-aware functionality to its software."

The difficulty with making DPM solutions business-aware lies in the fact that most companies keep information about their business units, applications, asset ownership, and the like in separate databases and in a format that requires significant effort to make it compatible with the DPM environment. Unlike other DPM solutions, the WysDM software suite can pull information directly from external databases and make it an integral part of the software's reporting and analysis functions. WysDM provides a number of methods for obtaining data from external sources, including reading from external SQL databases, querying LDAP sources, and reading in flat files such as CSV or structured data files like XML.

"Data protection is no longer just a technical issue; it now impacts nearly all aspects of an organization's business," said Alan Atkinson, CEO, WysDM Software. "Companies today have to deal with a slew of regulatory requirements that have emerged over the last five years, coupled with increased pressure to meet service levels and maintain 24x7 Internet operations that do not allow for backup windows. By adding application discovery to our solution set, we're enabling our customers to overcome the significant gap they've experienced in understanding the protection status of their applications at any given time, which helps ensure compliance and business continuity."

WysDM's added business-awareness functionality allows companies to obtain reports and analysis on given business criteria such as application exposure, and the ability to meet restore time objectives (RTOs). Companies can define application groups such as "messaging," business units such as "tax," and even policies such as "development servers with production-level retentions," by using information discovered by WysDM as well as that supplied from external databases and applications. As the servers in the groups change, WysDM automatically adapts so that the information is kept up-to-date.
