World Water Day 2015: Etowah Water and Sewer Authority Reinforces Commitment to Water Conservation with Sensus FlexNet Communication System

Public service provider deploys FlexNet to improve customer service and conserve water

RALEIGH, N.C.  – Faced with recent droughts and the mission to improve the quality of life for its customers, community and the environment, Etowah Water and Sewer Authority (the Authority) is leveraging the Sensus FlexNet™ communication system and iPERL™ meters to conserve its limited water resources on World Water Day, and every day. Since deploying FlexNet, the utility has improved water conservation, enhanced customer service and reduced non-revenue water.

As World Water Day is observed, Sensus urges public service providers to follow the Authority’s example and take an active role in addressing the issue of water conservation through the deployment of smart water networks.

The Authority needed to focus on water and sustainable development - the theme of World Water Day 2015 - as they dealt with an aging water infrastructure. Recent droughts in the area required them to address conservation and the protection of limited water resources.

They selected Sensus for its FlexNet communication system and iPERL water meters, two critical components of a smart water network. Given the service area’s mountainous terrain, the powerful, long-range radio capabilities of the FlexNet system are uniquely suited to the Authority’s requirement for reliable communication.

he iPERL meters offer unparalleled low flow accuracy with high flow durability. The Authority can accurately read the lowest usage flows, ensuring they can account for water down to the last drop.

Since partnering with Sensus, the utility is able to provide their customers with data-driven insights about their water use, helping them actively reduce their water consumption.

“We’re a utility that takes its commitment to the community seriously,” said Brooke Anderson, general manager, Etowah Water Sewer Authority. “Our customers trust in us to make solid decisions about our limited water resources. Consequently, our technology partner must be equally reliable to help ensure we’re good stewards of our water resources for future generations.”

The Sensus FlexNet system is a long-range radio network that serves as a dedicated and secure two-way communications highway for utilities and municipalities. The network architecture requires less infrastructure than competing offerings, resulting in lower cost of ownership. In addition, FlexNet provides the redundancy necessary for system reliability - a key ingredient for any public service or enterprise.

“Etowah Water Sewer Authority’s success demonstrates how smart water networks can make a meaningful impact on water conservation,” said Dan Pinney, global water marketing director at Sensus. “Water is at the heart of sustainable development, from economic growth to environmental sustainability. By properly managing and preserving our precious water resources, we can contribute to improving the well-being and growth of communities around the globe.”

Sensus has been providing smart water network solutions to water utilities for more than 100 years and has helped more than 5,000 customers in North America conserve water and improve operations. By implementing smart water networks, utilities can improve system performance and reduce inefficiencies, resulting in up to $12.5 billion in annual savings, according to research commissioned by Sensus.
