Extricom Announces New Market-Leading Enterprise Wireless LAN Capabilities

Wireless Switch Enables Multiple Services With Maximum Capacity and Mobility

NEW YORK, February 8/ -- Extricom, a designer and manufacturer of high-performance
wireless LAN infrastructure solutions for the enterprise, today announced the expansion of its wireless switch family, as well as the release of new major capabilities for the Extricom Wireless LAN System. The new functionality includes any band-any mode dual-channel operation, TrueReuse(TM) channel capacity multiplication, and voice over Wi-Fi capacity enhancements.

The new EXSW-2400 Wireless Switch is a central component of Extricom's patented Interference-Free(TM) WLAN system, a unique architecture that creates extended zones of coverage for every available channel, by using each channel at every access point that is controlled by the switch, without incurring the co-channel interference that otherwise plagues traditional WLAN systems. This dramatically simplifies deployment of WLAN, while allowing access points to be placed in any desired density, so as to maximize bandwidth and coverage, and deliver the seamless, zero-latency mobility required by applications such as streaming data, voice over Wi-Fi, and client-based VPN security. The EXSW-2400 networks twenty-four high-bandwidth, Extricom UltraThin(TM) Access Points to create large service zones that are ideal for covering wide areas such as multiple hospital floors, large warehouses, and entire schools.

"The Extricom solution provides enterprise customers with unparalleled flexibility in tailoring the WLAN to their operational needs," said Karel Taal, President of EtherConnect, a Dutch distributor of wireless infrastructure products serving The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg. "This new switch and system capabilities have been eagerly awaited by our customers. In particular, the any band-any mode dual-channel operation and TrueReuse are truly market-leading innovations that customers desire, to boost overall system performance in terms of both capacity and quality of service management. The any band-any mode operation is ideal for hospitals in The Netherlands, since they are not allowed to use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. The Extricom system is the only one that will enable these hospitals to concurrently run high speed data on one 802.11g channel and 802.11b voice over Wi-Fi on another channel, both within the same 2.4 GHz band that is permitted for hospitals, and do this using the same set of access points in their facilities."

The newly announced major system capabilities include:
- Any Band, Any Mode Dual-Channel Operation. Extricom extends the flexibility of the dual-radio UltraThin Access Points, enabling them to operate in any combination of band and Wi-Fi channel mode. For example, access points can be configured to concurrently run on two channels in the 2.4 GHz band, using 802.11b mode on one channel and 802.11g on the other. This capability is invaluable for businesses that wish to segregate different traffic and user types onto different channels, thereby solving the long-standing tug-of-war between "b" and "g" clients, voice and data, and user roles such as guests and employees. Such segregation capability is achieved without loss of coverage or capacity, and provides the system with inherent Quality of Service (QoS), without the need for clients and infrastructure to support the 802.11e QoS standard.

- TrueReuse. The EXSW-2400 is the first platform to support Extricom's patented TrueReuse channel processing technology, enabling the aggregate bandwidth of a standard Wi-Fi channel to be multiplied by up to three times.

- Enhanced Wi-Fi Voice. Through highly efficient control of the Wi-Fi channel, the Extricom system is able to double the industry's average number of concurrent G.711 voice calls per channel. Coupled with Extricom's unique zero-latency mobility and link robustness, the prospect of voice over WLAN is now reality.

"Our offerings today are a testament to Extricom's ahead-of-the-curve thinking amongst the multitude of competitors in the WLAN space," said Gideon Rottem, CEO of Extricom. "The drawbacks of traditional cell-planning WLAN architectures are well known. For enterprises to truly realize the business and operational benefits of wireless, a different approach to the underlying WLAN topology is needed, and that has been our steadfast mission. The Extricom solution is the first to deliver on the promise of wireless with wired-like performance, making WLAN a strategic, mission-critical asset for the enterprise."
