WiMAX Smartens up with Navini; Navini's Smart WiMAX(TM) Solution Optimizes Mobile WiMAX with Beamforming and MIMO

BOSTON and RICHARDSON, Texas, Oct. 9 // -- At the WiMAX World USA show, Navini Networks, the global leader(1) in providing plug-n-play broadband wireless access solutions with the most experience in commercial deployments, unveiled its strategy to optimize mobile WiMAX, a solution called Smart WiMAX(TM). Smart WiMAX(TM) combines the Smart Beamforming technology currently in commercial service around the world, with beamformed MIMO, which can double the data throughput for mobile WiMAX subscribers.

Navini's beamformed MIMO, called 'Smart MIMO', extends the range over which typical MIMO signals can be received and enhances the received signal power, so data can be transmitted as much as six (6) times faster.

"While some vendors have taken an "either MIMO or beamforming" approach to advanced antenna systems for mobile WiMAX, Navini's unique approach combines them to improve the performance of mobile and stationary users," said Sai Subramanian, Navini's VP of Product Management and Strategic Marketing. "Beamformed MIMO and Smart Beamforming together create a very powerful solution called Smart WiMAX(TM). Delivering both is better!"

The Smart WiMAX advantage is better mobility, higher throughput and better coverage (both indoor and outdoor), which means fewer cell sites, and significantly higher capacity networks.

"We've seen beamformed MIMO signals demonstrating over 12dB gain (16 times increase in received power) compared to standard MIMO. In many locations where standard MIMO signals are not receivable, the enhanced beamformed MIMO signal is not only received but decoded using 16 QAM (fast) or 64 QAM modulation (very, very fast). Additionally, Beamforming delivers over 9dB gain (8 times increase in received power) on the uplink, which is critical to getting broadband performance from low powered devices." Added Subramanian.

The key Beamforming technology is in service today including the largest personal broadband wireless deployments globally, such as Sydney, Dublin, and Singapore.

Navini's mobile WiMAX platform, the Ripwave(TM) MX base station, in commercial shipment since April 2006, is available in 2.3 GHz, 2.5/2.6 GHz, 3.4/3.5/3.6 GHz bands.

Today, Navini is taking orders for its Smart WiMAX(TM) systems for 802.16e Mobile WiMAX deployments, which include support for Wave 1 and key Wave 2 features (including Beamforming and MIMO).
