USI Announces 802.11g Wi-Fi SiP Module

New products aimed to expands handheld wireless communications market share

Universal Scientific Industrial Co., Ltd. (USI), a leading global design and manufacturing service company, today announced its new 802.11g Wi-Fi system-in-package (SiP) module as part of the company's ongoing effort for market expansion and technology leadership. Designed for a wide variety of handheld wireless communications applications, the SiP module incorporates a small form factor size, low power consumption and a state-of-the-art WaveLAN chipset from leading chip manufacturer Agere Systems. This product has been widely awarded by international customers with significant orders, and volume production is scheduled to begin in August, 2004.

"USI and Agere have been working closely together in providing the industry-leading 802.11g WLAN SiP module. The success demonstrates USI's expertise in designing, manufacturing and integrating wireless communications products, to provide our customers with optimal benefits through complete system integration," said C.Y. Wei, Corporate Senior Vice President and General Manager of USI's Communication Business Group. "Industrial Economic and Knowledge Center (IEK) estimated that Taiwan's wireless communications equipment market will reach NT$292.38 billion in 2004, with an annual growth rate of 47.5%. As WLAN technologies are extending from PC to handheld devices, USI 802.11g Wi-Fi SiP module can be used in a variety of applications, such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), media players, smartphones, Wi-Fi VoIP phones and digital camcorders."

Shen Ming-Kun, Managing Director of Agere Systems Taiwan said, "Agere's WaveLAN chipset provides a new "deep sleep connected" mode that enables a device to idle at extremely low power consumption of only 1.5 milliamps. Agere's advanced technologies and USI's comprehensive custom solutions combine to create win-win advantages in the highly competitive market of advanced wireless Communications."

The jointly developed 802.11g SiP module measures only 20-29mm (see product photo) and provides low power consumption, high performance and 54 Mbits/s throughputs. The technology of integrating its standard 16-bit interface and a direct solderless board-to-board connector significantly reduce the time-to-market and cost of new product designs. With years of expertise in communications technologies and commitment to long-term customer services, USI will continue to work with its partners in developing smaller, higher-performance modules for new technical applications in the future.
